SPIRAL MIND is an aspiring band from the Slovenian coastal region consisting of Manuel Brajnik(electric guitar, synthesisers), Rok Babič(bass, synthesisers) and Gaj Bostič(drums), with the occasional help of Matej Novak on saxophone.
With two EPs already under his belt, what started out as Brajnik’s solo musical endeavors quickly transpired into a fully fledged live ensemble. Together, the trio released their first album, A Play Of Shadows(Trite Sound, 2019), which was still mostly curated and arranged by Brajnik himself.
With the leverage of their first effort, they took part in Klubski Maraton 2020, a Slovenian band competition curated by one of the oldest independent student-run European radio stations Radio Študent(RŠ). Through Klubski Maraton they played many different gigs on stages across Slovenia. This year they had a chance to play at three different international festivals: MENT Ljubljana, Waves Vienna, and Radio Popolari festival in Milano.
With their broad range of influences, SPIRAL MIND are releasing their second studio album, The Inbetweens.
Much like the first one, their second effort is full of sophisticated instrumental building blocks that are crafted together in beautiful contemplations about music and sonic expression. Like their previous work, their sound transpires through multiple genres therefore making it quite difficult to categorise it and put the trio in a defined box, but their influences vary from jazz, progressive rock, underground electronic music, traditional African rhythms, trip-hop, and more.
If their first full length was a means to introspective music contemplation, this one serves as a much more extroverted development of danceable rhythmical experiments with the occasional instrumental confession. Seven tracks, that will grab you and suck you in like a wormhole, and as you tumble through atypical rhythmical structures, charismatic guitar grooves, dark and mean keyboard arpeggios and thunder-like sound synthesis, remember to keep an ear out for velvet details, because that’s where the magic lies. Couple of listens later, when you think you’ve understood everything and anything about this record, give it another go, you will find something new every time. An album that demands your full attention, so don’t catch your mind spiralling for whatever else reason!
